It should come as no surprise that food banks are one of the few rapidly growing organizations in America these days.I am constantly aware of how fortunate I am to be able to afford the food about which I write.
Because so many can't, and so many smaller, local providers are struggling, I try to spend my money where it most counts.
And I donate regularly to my local food bank. How about you?

It makes me feel good to donate to food banks, too. Food is so inexpensive in the U.S., it seems especially wrong for some of us to go without.
Back in December, I came across this post from Slate, about how canned-goods donations are problematic, where the same amount in cash does more for feeding the hungry:

That's an interesting article, Pete. I came to that conclusion about the time I wrote this post. I was shopping specifically for my food bank and I started wondering if I was making the best choices for the $$ and finally decided to just donate money so they could determine how best to use it. It's nice to know my instincts were correct.
